The UK  government set out their definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. These were reinforced in September 2014.

Les Quennevais is committed to ensuring British Values are upheld and encompassed alongside our own values of Respect, Risilence and Ambition.

PromotingJersey / British Values at Les Quennevais

The UK Department for Education has an effective five-part definition of British Values which includes:

·         Democracy

·         The rule of law

·         Individual liberty

·         Mutual respect

·         Tolerance of individuals with different faiths and beliefs

At Les Quennevais students will encounter these principles throughout everyday school life; in particular, our promotion of spiritual, moral, social and cultural through our curriculum, vision, mission and values.

Listed below are some examples of how we promote these values in our school community:

Democracy

Student voice is significant with regards to life at Les Quennevais. Our student-elected school council plays a strong role in our School. They are elected by their class peers and are involved in making the School a better place to learn. Students have a great amount of input in regard to what and how they learn, which promotes student voice.

Student questionnaires and interviews are also conducted throughout the year. We know that the formation of the school council and the active participation of our students will sow the seeds for a more sophisticated understanding of democracy in the future.

The rule of law

Our students will encounter rules and laws throughout their entire lives. We want our students to understand that whether these laws govern their classes, the School , the neighbourhood or the country, they are set for good reasons and must be adhered to.

To reinforce this at Les Quennevais we have values driven conversations and we carefully craft the use of language to allow students to realise the impact of their actions and how this in turn will affect them in later life, be it in the workplace or community.

This understanding of the importance of rules will be consistently reinforced through assemblies and our curriculum. The involvement of our students in the creation of classroom norms and a clearly structured system of sanctions helps them to understand the reasons behind the rules and the consequences if they are broken. Through our values and curriculum we allow opportunity to debate and discuss the reasons for laws so that children can recognise the importance of these for their own protection. We believe that clear explanations and real life stories emphasise the importance of the rule of law for our students.  We promote positive behaviour in the community and have a clear rewards system for those who respect our values and those of the wider community.

Individual liberty

We invest a great deal of time in creating a positive culture at Les Quennevais, so that children are in a safe environment where choices and freedoms are encouraged. We encourage students to choose the task that will challenge them, giving them more freedom to determine their own learning. We offer a range of clubs which students have the freedom to choose from, based on their interests. Through our E-Safety within ICT lessons, prevent guidance, and PSHE days we educate children on their rights and personal freedoms as well as supporting them in recognising how to exercise these freedoms safely. At Les Quennevais  we believe that valuing choice and freedom in daily school life will foster a value for individual liberty as students embark upon their adult lives.

Mutual respect

Mutual respect is at the core of all we do at Les Quennevais. Students learn to treat each other and staff with great respect. This is exemplified in our commitment to building relationships with parents, students and members of the community.   We value manners and consideration and reward actions which promote positive behaviour. This is evident when walking around the School and in the classrooms.

Tolerance of individuals with different faiths and beliefs

At Les Quennevais we offer a culturally rich and diverse curriculum in which all major religions are studied and respected. We strongly believe that tolerance is gained through knowledge and understanding. Through our curriculum and the routines of our daily school life, we strive to demonstrate tolerance and help students to become knowledgeable and understanding citizens who can build a better Jersey for the future.  Our values are important to us as we want to ensure our young people become valuable and fully rounded members of society who treat others with respect and tolerance, regardless of background.

We will ensure that our young people understand the importance of respect and leave school fully prepared for life in modern society.

Our commitment to fostering British / Jersey values form the basis for our social, moral, spiritual and cultural (SMSC) provision for our students.
