mathematics

Mathematics is all around us, from the in-depth calculations and programming that make up the apps on your phone to calculating your weekly shop.  Maths is for everyone. It is diverse, engaging and essential.

The Mathematics department at Les Quennevais are committed to ensuring that every learner is equipped with the right skills to reach their future destination, whatever that may be, and provide an environment where students can learn and become competent users of mathematics and mathematical application, helping students transition from concrete to abstract concepts and to develop reasoning and problem solving skills.

Throughout their time at Les Quennevais, students will be following a 5 year Mastery in Maths plan. This allows students to acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject by building on prior knowledge, acquiring new skills and re-evaluating the application of their knowledge as an ongoing process.

At Key Stage 4, all students study the Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics syllabus (IGCSE spec A), covering all areas of Mathematics; Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measures, Probability, Statistics, Ratio, Proportion and rates of change. In January of Y11, all students will sit their first external qualification at Foundation level. The results will be available in March and those results will then determine which pathway students will follow in the lead up to the Summer series. Some students will progress to preparing for the Higher Tier examination, whilst others will retake the Foundation Tier. There may also be the option for students to take an additional qualification, GCSE Statistics, but this will be by invitation. All students are supported throughout using a combination of after school revision classes, morning intervention groups, weekly past papers and exemplar answers with examiner commentaries.
